Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1 :

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch cake pans with butter or cooking spray.

Step 2:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Whisk to combine.

Step 3:

  • In a separate mixing bowl, combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • Whisk to combine.

Step 4:

  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Gradually stir in the hot water, mixing until the batter is smooth.

Step 5:

  • Divide the cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting them.

For the Chocolate Frosting:

Step 1:

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and unsweetened cocoa powder together until smooth.

Step 2:

  • Gradually add the powdered sugar and milk, alternating between the two, mixing until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 3:

  • Once the cakes have cooled, place one cake on a serving platter.
  • Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top.
  • Place the second cake on top of the frosting layer.
  • Spread another layer of frosting on top of the second cake.

Step 4:

  • Decorate the cake as desired with additional frosting, chocolate shavings, or fresh berries.
  • Slice and serve the chocolate cake, enjoying every rich and decadent bite!

Notes

  • You can customize this cake by adding chopped nuts or a raspberry filling between the cake layers. Enjoy!
  • Start with room temperature ingredients like eggs and butter. Room temperature eggs create a fluffier cake, while room temperature butter makes for a lighter buttercream frosting.
  • Enhance chocolate flavor by using hot brewed coffee instead of water or adding 1 tablespoon espresso powder to the wet ingredients. Coffee enriches the chocolate taste without imparting a coffee flavor, resulting in a more indulgent cake.
