Description
Cannoli are traditional Sicilian pastries that date back to the Arab rule of Sicily. The name “cannoli” comes from the Italian word for “little tube,” which describes their distinctive shape. Cannoli consist of a fried pastry dough rolled into tubes and filled with a creamy mixture of ricotta cheese, sugar, and various flavorings like vanilla, citrus zest, or chocolate chips.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup Marsala wine (or white wine)
- 1 egg, beaten (for sealing)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
Step1:
In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold butter and rub it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step2:
Gradually add the Marsala wine while mixing, until the dough forms a soft but firm ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Step3:
Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out 4-inch circles. Wrap each circle around a metal cannoli tube, sealing the edge with a bit of the beaten egg.
Step4:
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (180°C). Fry the dough-wrapped tubes until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels. Let the shells cool completely before removing from the molds.
