Make Lifting Easy with Lodge’s Two-Handled Cast Iron Skillet

Two-Handled Cast Iron Skillet

I adore my dual-handled Lodge cast iron skillet—it’s tough, perfect for searing meats (and even vegetarian options like cauliflower steak!), and has developed a smooth, almost nonstick surface over years of use. But you know what’s the best part? Those two wide handles on each side.

It’s similar to a round casserole dish, but in my opinion, even easier to handle. That’s why whenever someone new to cooking asks me about cast iron, I always recommend this skillet for its easy lifting.

Cast Iron Can Be Heavy

Lodge L10SKL Cast Iron Pan, 12″

Sure, cast iron is fantastic for all sorts of stovetop and oven dishes (like cornbread, skillet bakes, seared pork chops, hash browns, and more), but it’s also heavy. Our favorite skillet from Lodge, with one long handle and a helper handle, weighs about five-and-a-half pounds. While I enjoy hitting the gym, I don’t want a workout while cooking dinner.

Two Handles for Easy Lifting and Pouring

But here’s where the two handles shine. Simply put, it’s much simpler to grip two handles and maneuver the hefty pan compared to one with just a long handle.

My friends have our favorite cast iron skillet, and every time I lift it by the main handle, it tilts forward, almost spilling its contents. Blame it on weak wrists or the weight of cast iron (probably a bit of both).

This isn’t the case with the dual-handled pan. Just grab your pot holders or folded kitchen towels, wrap them around each wide handle, and lift with both hands—easy! Plus, with the pour spout, it’s a breeze to pour out any leftover grease or used oil without making a mess.

FAQs

1. How do you clean cast iron?

We have a detailed article that debunks the myths (no soap? No scrubbing? Nonsense!) of cleaning a cast iron skillet. In short, you can wash it with soap and a sponge, just make sure to dry it thoroughly and coat it with a thin layer of food-safe oil (like Canola) before storing.

2. What size cast iron skillet is best?

While our preferred skillet size is 10.25 inches, having a larger 12-inch skillet is also handy for bigger meals or larger cooking quantities.
