Description
Country Fried Steak is a classic Southern American dish that usually consists of steak coated in a flour and spice mixture, then fried until golden brown and crispy, and finished with a rich white sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 4 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
- 4 (6-ounce) cube steaks
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
- 1/2 cup canola oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 2 teaspoons hot sauce
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Steaks
- In a large bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper.
- Submerge cube steaks in the mixture and refrigerate for at least an hour.
Step 2: Prepare the Flour Mixture
- In a shallow dish, combine flour, remaining salt, pepper, onion powder, and paprika.
- Reserve 2 tablespoons of seasoned flour for the gravy.
Step 3: Coat the Steaks
- Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, then back into the buttermilk mixture, and finally into the flour again.
Step 4: Chill the Steaks
- Place coated steaks on a cooling rack over a sheet pan and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Step 5: Fry the Steaks
- Heat oil in a large skillet to 350°F.
- Fry steaks for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Transfer to a clean cooling rack over a baking sheet and keep warm in a 200°F oven.
Step 6: Prepare the Gravy
- In the same skillet, add butter and reserved flour. Whisk until lightly browned.
- Pour in beef broth and hot sauce, whisking continuously.
- Simmer for 3 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Step 7: Serve
- Top fried steaks with gravy and serve with your favorite sides.
