Description
Shrimp Saganaki is a Greek dish which is usually made of fresh shrimp, tomatoes, onions, garlic and Greek cheese, drizzled with lemon juice and herbs and finally baked until golden brown.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, diced
- 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Crusty bread or rice (for serving)
Instructions
Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and diced bell peppers. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until the peppers start to soften.
Step 2: Add the Shrimp and Tomatoes
- Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the shrimp start to turn pink.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices and tomato paste. Stir well to combine.
Step 3: Season and Simmer
- Season the mixture with dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper according to your taste. Stir everything together and let it simmer for about 10-12 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
Step 4: Finish with Feta and Serve
- Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the top of the shrimp mixture.
- Let the feta melt slightly into the sauce, about 2 minutes.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
- Serve the Shrimp Saganaki hot with crusty bread or over a bed of rice.
